DIVE EXCURSIONS FOR CERTIFIED DIVERS

There’s an exciting array of dive sites just waiting to be explored right on Best Dives Centara Grand’s doorstep. Just a few meters away from the dive centre lies a huge shipwreck called the MV Kudhi Maa Wreck, a fascinating dive site to explore for Advanced divers. For beginners, the reef is a good place to start, with small reef sharks and stingrays swimming by. For experienced divers, there is what the South Ari atoll is famous for – whale sharks! There are plenty of exciting dive sites in the area, so you will never run out of choices. Every day, we explore different sites to give you the most memorable diving experience in the Maldives.

Dive excursions are for certified divers only and must book at least one day in advance.

FIVE ROCKS

Level: Advanced Open Water

Distance from Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives: 35 minutes by dhoni

This spectacularly unique dive site is a small circular reef split into five pieces by up to 3-metre wide canyons. This is one of the most interestingly beautiful formations in the South Ari Atoll. Here you’ll find amazing fan corals around the thila at a depth of 30 metres. The canyons, overhangs, and the floor are covered with sea fans, soft coral, and sea whips. Marine life is abundant on this site, from small clownfish to huge grey reef sharks.

MV KUDI MAA WRECK

Level: Advanced Open Water

Distance from Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives: 10 minutes from the dive centre

Situated on Centara Grand Island Maldives House Reef, MV Kudhi Maa was a Japanese freighter, 51 metres long and 8 metres wide. The main hull is a huge space with a water tank at one end. On the deck, there is a large crane and a largely intact bridge area. This 1,200-ton freighter was purposely sunk in 1999 and is now a haven for an array of sea dwellers. Near the bottom, you’ll find stingrays and nurse sharks. You will also find shrimps, shoals of reef fish, moray eels, large schools of glassfish, snapper and trevally make this artificial reef their home. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a whitetip reef shark. Don’t forget to look for the resident stonefish & frogfish that hide very well here.

KUDA RAH THILA

Level: Advanced Open Water

Distance from Centara Grand Island Resort & Spa Maldives: 30 minutes by dhoni

Located in the Dhigurah Channel this small underwater island, measuring just 45 by 30 metres and with depths in the range of 13-30 metres, is one of the most famous dive sites in South Ari Atoll. The reef is covered in nightly coloured soft corals. There are two large overhangs with yellow daisy corals spreading across the ceilings and fan corals on the bottom. A small coral covered archway can be found at one end of the reef. Large schools of blue-striped snappers surround the reef, and turtles and Napoleons regularly visit the thila. Occasionally, grey reef and whitetip reef sharks can be spotted here too.
